Event Description
Celebrate the Year of the Tiger with a visit to the Conservatory of Flowers where rare examples of penjing, elaborate miniature plant landscapes created on trays and in containers, will be on display for two weeks only. The fascinating art of penjing dates back more than 2000 years and is the origin of Japan’s bonsai tradition. You’ll be amazed by the beauty and fine detailing of these living arrangements of stones, pruned trees and moss that evoke everything from idyllic, pagoda-studded river valleys to lush, tropical islands. Then, stroll through the Potted Plants Gallery where blooming branches of quince and pussy willow, as well as potted kumquat, mandarin orange and Buddha’s Hand, boost all visitors’ chances for good fortune and wealth in 2010.

Penjing display made possible by Dr. John Peterson and California Polytechnic State University.
